You may not have words about Villa-Arsnl match. But, if you compare this match with the one played 2 days later, it makes a lot of sense and generates lot of words.
So, lets compare Villa-Arsnl match with Arsnl-Pompey match.

First of all, there’s one common thing between both the matches. Arsnl played with 2 goal keepers, Almunia and goal post. While goal post outperformed Almunia in the first match, whereas both were competent enough in the second one, but goal post ended up making the most important save of the match…Crouch’s header.

And if you compare Arsnl’s side, there were 2 major differences. Djourou replaced by Clichy and Adebayor replaced Song. Ofcourse Bendtner replaced Van Persie, but that doesn’t make much difference. Adebayor is a kind of striker who hardly behaves like a striker. He gets involved in the Arsnl’s passing game and sets up a lot of goals rather than looking to score them. That’s a good thing and a bad thing too. I wont explain. But, Adebayor ended up with a high count of assists this season and in the previous ones too. Song is never a good passer of the ball. He cant keep the ball, he cant pass it. He’s like a virus to the beautiful Arsnl side. So, Wenger got rid of the virus, if not permanently. And Clichy adds a lot to the defense. Arsnl has a world class full backs in Sagna and Clichy. Gallas would form a world-class partnership if he’s partnered by someone who’s tall and can win the long balls in the penalty area. He needs someone like Vidic. Sol Campbell would’ve been perfect but he’s not with Arsnl anymore.

So, Wenger improved the side a lot from the previous match and got a better result. Eboue did well in the pompey match. He was played in his natural position and given strict instructions about what he’s supposed to do. He tried to be creative once in a while but atleast did his job well by keeping the ball and winning it at times. He gave some width to the team on the right which doesn’t happen when Denilson plays on the right. Diaby was played in a key position…that of Febregas’. He was OK.

But the side which played Pompey had the confidence which was lacked by the side which played Villa. In the pompey match, Arsnl kept on trying for the goal and defended well. But in the Villa match, Arsnl couldn’t keep the ball even when it had a 2-goal lead.

@Tej : I'm not comparing that match with any other match. I was taking the Villa match in isolation. And considering what we spoke at half time during the match, I guess you are bewildered too.

@Salvatore : Ha ha...I dont think thats quite what you call football...

You missed the point completely then.

I got the point.

Just the fact that playing the game has got nothing to do with the result is quite hard to believe sometimes...
