Know the difference?

There is one particular aspect of football that has me going berserk every time it happens. Well, who am I kidding? There are many aspects of football which makes me go berserk. Here's one of them.

There were two incidents in the Manchester United-Arsenal game which I would like to point out. One was the incident where Fletcher threw himself at Arshavin in the penalty box and Fletcher got the ball after he got the man.

Then, minutes later, there was another incident where Diaby took down Evra with a similar challenge outside the area.

This was the conversation between Martin Tyler and Andy Gray after the second of those incidents.

Martin : You know the difference?
Andy : Ya, I know the difference. One was inside the penalty box and the other wasn't.

One was given as a foul and the other wasn't. No points for guessing which was given.

Well...lets also talk about diving. Eduardo is being punished for diving in UCL qual match. But, what about the dive by Rooney in ManU-Arsnl match? For more clarity, freeze the frame when Almunia was just about to make contact with Rooney...you'll see that Rooney is half down by then. Shit happens...If we cant do anything about it...we gotto take it...like we've been for ages !

@Tej, Rooney did not dive. Almunia left his body in the way and Rooney chose not to jump over him. As Andy Gray said, there's no law which states you have to jump over players.
So, technically, by the book, it was a penalty. There is no argument.

@vivek
I bet you've missed the Premier League Highlights programme on Monday on ESPN. there's no rule for player to jump above the GK...but Rooney was half down even before Almunia made any contact. That's the reason I've asked you to freeze the frame and see.

A penalty comes under a lot more scrutiny than a free kick, hence there's no saying which way a decision for a foul inside the box will go. Football isn't perfect, much like everything else.

Although football is a lot more perfect than everything else.
